Make visually impactful, red, white, and blue cupcakes that form the American flag design for your next holiday gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box white cake mix
  • Ingredients required by cake mix box (eggs, oil, water)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Red food coloring
  • Blue food coloring
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1 pint fresh blueberries

Instructions

  1. Prepare the white cake mix according to package directions using the required eggs, oil, and water. Pour batter into cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  2. Bake the cupcakes according to the package instructions for cupcakes. Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  3. Prepare the buttercream frosting: Beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing slowly until combined. Add the vanilla extract and milk. Beat on high speed until light and fluffy.
  4. Divide the frosting evenly into three bowls. Leave one bowl white. Add red food coloring to the second bowl until you achieve a bright red color. Add blue food coloring to the third bowl until you achieve a deep blue color.
  5. To assemble the flag design, arrange the cooled cupcakes close together on a large serving platter or board in a rectangular shape (e.g., 6 rows of 6 cupcakes).
  6. Frost the top left corner section (the union) with the blue frosting, covering the cupcakes completely in that area.
  7. Frost the remaining sections of the cupcakes with the white frosting, creating stripes.
  8. Use the red frosting to pipe or spread stripes over the white-frosted sections, alternating with the white frosting to mimic the flag’s stripes.
  9. Place the sliced strawberries on the blue section to represent the stars. If you prefer a simpler look, you can use small white candies or sprinkles on the blue section instead.
  10. Serve these festive holiday treats immediately or chill until ready to serve.

Notes

  • For a cleaner look, use a piping bag with a star tip to apply the frosting colors.
  • If you are making a large flag, you may need to double the frosting recipe.
  • These are excellent patriotic desserts for kids to help decorate.
